Serena Williams debuts ‘one-legged catsuit’ in Australian Open first round
Serena Williams is no stranger to pushing the boundary when it comes to on-court fashion, but this may have been her most innovative look yet.
Stepping onto Rod Laver Arena for her Australian Open first-round clash with Germany’s Laura Siegemund, Williams showed off a one-legged black, pink and red “catsuit.”
Despite the American legend’s match clashing with the Super Bowl, there was still plenty of social media reaction to the 23-time Grand Slam tournament winner’s outfit.

Williams put in a performance befitting the suit, rolling through Siegemund 6-1 6-1 to get her bid for a fifth title at Melbourne Park off to the perfect start.Williams’ bold on-court attire has caused drama in the past, most notably at the 2018 French Open, her first Grand Slam following the birth of her daughter. At that time, she donned a full-length black catsuit. French Tennis Federation president Bernard Giudicelli later said Williams wouldn’t be permitted to wear a similar outfit in the future.”It’s a bit late because the collections are already designed but we are going to nonetheless ask the manufacturers to let us know what is coming,” he told Tennis Magazine. “I believe we have sometimes gone too far. Serena’s outfit this year, for example, would no longer be accepted. You have to respect the game and the place.”
The following year at Roland Garros, Williams responded with a more conventional two-piece outfit from sponsor Nike, though this time it came with a statement.Williams told reporters: “Well, on the outfit it has words in French, and it says ‘Queen,’ it says ‘Champion,’ and it says ‘Mom.'”Those are things that mean a lot to me and reminders for me and for everyone that wants to wear it. Just remind everyone that they can be champions and are queens. So I love that about it. And I don’t know, my superpower today was just hanging in there and staying positive for once.”
