Colonial Downs Proposes Casino Resort in Dumfries

Rosie’s Gaming Emporium opened doors on January 8. It is a 19,000-square-foot gaming center with 95 video slots, located in the Triangle Shopping Center in Dumfries. Colonial Downs, the property’s owner, now proposes another building, which is a massive $389 million casino resort on the grounds of Potomac Landfill, a debris junkyard on the edge of town.
The future facility would be called “The Rose” and would be the first in Virginia with this size, providing such gaming options.
According to the plan for “The Rose”, the facility will consist of 50,000 square feet of gaming space, a 250-seat sports bar, as well as other bars and restaurants, 200 hotel rooms, a theater with 1,500 seats and 7,000 square feet of meeting space.
Colonial Downs, which owns Rosie’s and operates a racetrack in New Kent County near Richmond, as well as four other Rosie’s emporiums across the state, will pitch its idea today during a 7 a.m. Dumfries Town Council meeting.
The new facility is hoped to bring a lot of profit to the town. It is expected to create 640 jobs that pay $15 an hour wage. 96 managers will be hired to work at The Rose and they will make an average of $70,000 a year.
According to Colonial Downs, the new casino would generate $11.3 million a year in new tax revenue for Prince William County and nearly $80,000 a year for Dumfries.
If the pitch is accepted, construction of the new casino will start in August this year, which means that Potomac Landfill will be closed 11 years earlier than planned.
The casino will take 22 acres of the property with 79 acres remaining that will be converted into a park with sports fields, trails and open space.
The town documents stated that the park would open in December 2022 and the casino would open only a month later. This is if everything goes according to plan.
The Potomac Landfill
The town agreed with the landfill in 2016 to close the facility. The closing date was set for 2032. At that time, the town planned on turning the site into a public park.
The problem for the landfill started in 2011 when the neighbors and drivers on the Interstate 95 complained of sulfur smell. It was permeated the surrounding area so the facility needed to shut down.
Rosie’s Gaming Emporium is the first gaming facility to open its doors in Northern Virginia. Since its opening, more than 21,000 people have visited the gaming parlor in the shopping center.
The property has donated more than $75,000 to charity since it started operating and has created 100 jobs for the locals. Its establishment was made possible by the legalization of gambling in Dumfries in November 2019.
A citywide referendum passed with more than 60% of the vote, following an extensive advertising campaign by Colonial Downs.

Is Hellmuth vs Negreanu happening?

Bradley Beal looked miserable on Wizards bench, prompting flood of empathy from Twitter
February 16, 2021 0 Comments

We recap some stories you may have missed including a huge PKO event and how much of himself is Landon Tice playing for?

KidPoker vs the Poker Brat?
We hinted at it last week and now it seems confirmed that Daniel Negreanu and Phil Hellmuth will play heads-up.
Given both men are traditionally live players it seems inevitable that it will be face to face and streamed on PokerGO.
The early betting markets have suggested Hellmuth is the favourite, which seems ludicrous given how much Negreanu improved in his heads-up challenge against Doug Polk.

Happy to play anyone on @PokerGo App’s “High Stakes Duel.” Looks like they are bringing me the GREAT Daniel Negreanu @RealKidPoker, the guy that studied heads up for months w coaches I respect, so be it. It will be a great challenge for me! Hoping I don’t look like THIS photo!! pic.twitter.com/EpE1BqRMWP
— phil_hellmuth (@phil_hellmuth) February 13, 2021

Tice has skin in the game
The other big heads-up match in the works is Landon Tice vs Bill Perkins, and it has been the subject of a lot of debate this last week.
Namely, how much does the poker wunderkind Landon Tice have invested in himself? Rumours circulated that he is playing for just 10% of himself in this challenge where he is already paying Bill Perkins $720,000 to play.
Tice confirmed that he has sold a lot of action for this event but while his percentage is low, it still means he has a lot of his net worth on the line:

Let me make something clear that I’m sure everyone cares about regarding my challenge with @bp22 I’m selling a lot of action for it. A lot.I’m not rolled to battle at nosebleeds. However, I am putting a very large amount of my relative net worth on myself winning it.

MicroMillions the biggest PKO ever?
The MicroMillions Main Event was a PKO for the first time in its history and it (probably) automatically became the biggest field ever for a progressive knockout tournament.
49,487 entries for the $22 Main Event, which was not quite enough to hit the $1 million guarantee.
It did lead to one player bagging almost $60,000 for their troubles including $18,651.13 in bounties alone:

The final table

Table stakes only
OK, so this week’s meme classic from Reddit beats all those ‘toilet roll poker home game’ jokes from last year:
When Polaks Play Poker from r/poker

Will we see Hellmuth vs Negreanu heads-up? Let us know in the comments:

TSN Archives: Tracking Ken Griffey Jr.’s meteoric rise from No. 1 pick to MLB star

เคล็ดลับในการรับมือกับจังหวะที่ไม่ดี
February 16, 2021 0 Comments

Few rookies have captured the nation’s attention quite like Ken Griffey Jr., the lefty with the sweet swing, huge smile and incredible all-around talent when he was a 19-year-old kid playing in the majors. Instead of giving you just one Junior Griffey story, we’re going to give you a glimpse at how a weekly publication like TSN covered a phenom like Griffey in the world before social media.
Every issue of TSN included hundreds of little notes on players and teams, in every sport. There were plenty of features and in-depth stories, of course, but lots of the pages read like a compilation of Twitter-size news bytes. With his dad already a TSN regular, Junior had name recognition and the talent that intoxicated the baseball-loving country. We’ll start with the first mention we could find of Junior and go all the way up to his first (of many) TSN cover — which came out right when he made his MLB debut. And then, for fun, we’ll add one entertaining tidbit from his rookie season.
TSN ARCHIVES: TSN introduces Joe DiMaggio to America♦♦♦♦♦June 8, 1987The first mention of Ken Griffey’s son in the pages of The Sporting News magazine was actually in the team notes section. In the team notes for the Pirates, written by Bob Hertzel. Scouting director Elmer Gray was responsible for Cincinnati drafting Ken Griffey when he was with the Reds. The Pirates hold the second pick in June’s amateur draft, and Gray could have a hand in the drafting of Ken Griffey Jr.♦♦♦♦♦June 15, 1987On the left side of Page 2, the table of contents, is the first picture of a smiling Ken Griffey Jr., to grace the pages of TSN. Junior’s wearing a Braves uniform and cap; the picture was taken before the draft in the Atlanta dugout, where his dad was playing in 1987. The story of the MLB Draft results — mostly about Griffey Jr. — is on Page 22. Here’s an excerpt, from the article written by Seattle-based contributor Jim Street.Griffey kept the comparisons within the family, saying he saw himself as a copy of his father. “We do basically everything the same,” he said. “We hit, run and throw the same.”But Ken Griffey Sr. disagreed. “To me, he’s got more power than I will ever have. He’s a lot better than I was at the same age.”As a senior at Moeller this season, Griffey batted .478 with seven home runs and 28 RBIs in 24 games. He was 13 for 13 in stolen bases. “I can’t compare him to other players around the country because I haven’t seen them,” said Moeller coach Mike Cameron. “But he’s the finest, ability-wise, I’ve seen in 20 years.”Among the current major leaguers Cameron coached are Barry Larkin and Buddy Bell of the Reds. ♦♦♦♦♦June 22, 1987Longtime TSN staffer Stan Isle wrote a weekly notes column in the magazine for more than a decade, and he led off his column this week talking about Griffey Jr. At age 17, Ken Griffey Jr. signs a $150,000 contract with the Mariners as the No. 1 selection in major league baseball’s amateur draft. Contrast that with the circumstances 18 years ago, when Ken Griffey Sr. — now an Atlanta Braves outfielder in his 15th major league season — signed his first professional contract with Cincinnati. As the elder Griffey recalled, Cincinnati game him “a jock strap, a pair of sanitary hose and a Reds warmup jacket” before dispatching him to Bradenton (Gulf Coast) with a contract that called for $500 a month. He was selected in the 29th round of the 1969 draft, perhaps the 700th player chosen. Young Griffey is a power-hitting outfielder like his father and a heralded product of Cincinnati’s Moeller High School. “He runs like I did when I was chasing his mother,” said the proud father. Griffey has reported to Seattle’s rookie league team at Bellingham (Northwest), where he can look forward to bus trips into Oregon and Idaho. “If he has any problems,” said Ken Sr., “he can give me a call. I’ll call him every day, too, to make sure he’s alright.”♦♦♦♦♦Aug.10, 1987Griffey items, such as this one on Bob McCoy’s “Keeping Score” page, quickly became regulars in pretty much every issue. Ken Griffey Jr., the No. 1 pick in the June free-agent draft, on life with the Seattle Mariners’ farm club in Bellingham, Wash., in his first summer away from his Cincinnati home: “I kept thinking about things I’d be doing back at home, you know, running around the house with my brother, being at the pool, just things like that. I got real down … I didn’t know what to do. All I knew is I wanted to go back.”♦♦♦♦♦Sept. 7, 1987Of course the Mariners entry on the “Around the Minors” page is about Griffey. Bellingham outfielder Ken Griffey Jr., the first player selected in this summer’s draft, was batting .301 on August 25 and was tied for the Northwest League lead in home runs (13). “He started out very, very slowly,” manager Rick Sweet said. “Basically, he was overmatched. But now he’s one of the better hitters in the league.” Sweet predicted that Griffey, 17, would be in the majors by the time he is 21 or 22.♦♦♦♦♦Sept. 21, 1987In the era before social media, the “Voice of the Fan” letters page was a big deal. It was a way to have your opinion broadcast to the entire nation. This fan, Eddie Cannon Jr., of Owensboro, Ky., has an issue with the “phony” NCAA system. The more things change, eh? Eddie’s letter to TSN:I am tired of hearing everyone from congressmen to college coaches wanting to protect the amateur athlete. First of all, they don’t need to be protected from anyone but themselves. They are the ones who accept the money. They want the money. In baseball, the players who want the money sign a minor-league contract and play. The players who cheat are the ones using the college system. They want to refine their athletic skills for the pros and college is the only place for them to do so.It’s funny how everyone made such a big deal when Herschel Walker left Georgia after his junior year, but when Ken Griffey Jr. signed a contract out of high school no one was complaining that he was going to miss out on a college education. What’s really needed is an honest farm system for the NFL and NCAA, not the phony system that now exists in the colleges.♦♦♦♦♦March 21, 1988From Stan Isle’s notes column again. Seriously, TSN was Twitter before Twitter. Think of the RTs this anecdote would have generated.Outfielder Ken Griffey Jr., behind the wheel of the Mercedes he bought after receiving a reported $175,000 signing bonus from the Mariners last summer, drove all around Tempe, Ariz., trying to find the Seattle club’s spring training hotel. In exasperation, Griffey swung into a parking lot and used his auto phone to call Bob Porter, the Mariners’ public relations director. Griffey listened intently, jotted down Porter’s directions and started his engine. He drove about 100 feet before he looked up and realized he had called Porter from the lot at the Mariners’ hotel ♦♦♦♦♦April 25, 1988Senior was playing for the Braves to start the 1988 season, which meant the Braves team notes were a great place for this Junior tidbit:Ken Griffey Jr. had two homers in his first three games with San Bernardino, Seattle’s California League affiliate. His father had only two hits in his first 17 at-bats with the Braves. “I’ve got to get some of those bats Junior is using,” the father said. Griffey, who turned 38 during the first week of the season, still hopes to play at least one game in the majors at the same time as his son. ♦♦♦♦♦May 25, 1988Yep, the Griffey Jr. excitement was real, folks. Ken Griffey Jr. is so popular in San Bernardino (California) that a Ken Griffey Poster Night promotion May 6 was a sellout. On May 17, Griffey and two teammates addressed 2,500 sixth-graders in the “Safe at home, not out on drugs” program. ♦♦♦♦♦July 4, 1988Ugh. Bad news, in the “Around the Minors” page. Outfielder Ken Griffey Jr., the first player selected in last year’s draft, probably will miss the rest of the season because of a stress fracture in a vertebra. He was batting .338 and had 11 homers, 42 RBIs and 32 stolen bases for San Bernardino (California) when he injured himself diving for a ball June 9. ♦♦♦♦♦Aug. 8, 1988More bad news for the Griffey duo. For a couple of months now, pretty much every Braves team note talked about Senior’s struggles and the Braves’ attempts to trade him. Eventually he was released, promoting this note in Moss Klein’s “A.L. Beat” page.
For Seinfeld fans … the Ken Phelps-for-Jay Buhner (and his rocket for an arm) trade might not have happened if the Yankees had just waited a couple of days to get Ken Griffey. We would have been robbed of a classic sitcom quote. pic.twitter.com/nQ5xvYkQZt
— Ryan Fagan (@ryanfagan) August 6, 2018♦♦♦♦♦Aug. 29, 1988He’s back! The injury wasn’t as bad as first thought. From the Around the Minors page.Ken Griffey Jr., in his first appearance since being sidelined for two months with a stress fracture in a vertebra, went 2 for 4, scored a run, stole a base and had one RBI as Vermont (Eastern) lost to Williamsport, 4-3. ♦♦♦♦♦March 6, 1989Neither Griffey had a great start to spring. In the Reds team note, it was mentioned that Senior was hit in the chin by a ball that glanced off a protective screen near first base. And then this, from the Mariners team note. Ken Griffey Jr. was a first-day casualty when a thrown ball hit his glove and then slammed into his right eye. The eye was swollen shut. ♦♦♦♦♦March 27, 1989Junior is still just 19, but it’s become obvious during the spring that his arrival in the majors will be sooner than later. A short stand-alone story written by Jim Street on Page 28 is headlined “A Father-Son ‘First’ For the Griffeys?” An excerpt:Ken Griffey Jr. is making a serious bid to become the youngest player in the major leagues this season. The Seattle Mariners’ 19-year-old center fielder, drafted No. 1 in the country in 1987 out of Moeller High School in Cincinnati, went to spring training as a non-roster invitee. But after 12 Cactus League games, he was batting .429 (15 for 35) with one home run, two triples, two doubles and a team-high 12 runs batted in. “He can run, he can hit, he can throw and he can make things happen,” said M’s pitching ace Mark Langston. “I don’t care if he’s 19 or whatever, this guy can make the club and help us.” ♦♦♦♦♦

April 10, 1989The Griffeys make the cover of The Sporting News. The cover story, written by Griffey regular Jim Street, is on Page 12. The headline screams “Clock Strikes Griffey Time.” An excerpt … Griffey rushed himself into the picture, and the outlook for the Mariners changed almost overnight. In his spring-training prospectus, (manager Jim) Lefebvre didn’t even mention Griffey’s name among those battling for outfield positions.By the time the Cactus League schedule began, Griffey’s status already was on the rise. And there was no stopping him. Lefebvre had decided to play the youngster almost every game. “I want to take a good look at him,” he said. “We’ll see how it goes.”It went better than anyone expected. Even Griffey. “I didn’t expect to be playing this well,” he said when he was midway through a 15-game hitting streak that was the longest in Mariners’ history for spring training. And when the Cactus League pitching got better, so did Griffey’s hitting. Skeptics were waiting for him to be overmatched, but he went through a three-week stretch in which he never went more than four at-bats without a hit.♦♦♦♦♦April 10, 1989Legendary Dayton sportswriter Hal McCoy was a TSN regular, and he crushed his story on what it was like for Ken Griffey, member of the famed Big Red Machine and now back with the Reds, to become Griffey Senior in the blink of an eye. An excerpt:As a Grapefruit League game was in progress at the Reds’ spring training facility in Plant City, Fla., Griffey and fellow outfielders Paul O’Neill, Eric Davis and Kal Daniels sweated throuhgh 50-yard wind sprints along the outfield warning track. O’Neill, Davis and Daniels completed their work, but Griffey plodded on, perspiration dripping off his chin in the 80-degree heat. When Griffey finished, Davis leaned against a bullpen chain link fence and asked Griffey, “Hey, ol’ man, need some air? If you do, I’ll go to the clubhouse and fetch some.”Griffey walked slowly to the clubhouse and equipment manager Bernie Stows greeted him with, “Hi, Senior.” Griffey feigned anger and Stowe said, “I could have called you senior citizen.”Cincinnati restaurateur Jeff Ruby, who was in the clubhouse, added his comments, saying, “It’s the Other Griffey.”The elder Griffey quickly corrected Ruby, saying, “I’m the Original Griffey.”♦♦♦♦♦May 29, 1989With all of 14 MLB games under his belt, Griffey Jr. rattled off a stretch of eight hits in eight consecutive at-bats (with a couple of walks mixed in), and he batted .625 in the final week of April, his first month in the bigs. That stretch was covered in a short article by Jim Street in the May 15 issue. So, yes, the hype jumped up a notch. Another Street short, titled “Griffey Bars Gobbled Up” told the story.SEATTLE — Demand for the Ken Griffey Jr. Milk Chocolate Bar far exceeds the supply and shows no signs of letting up. “It has gotten out of hand,” said Mike Cramer of Pacific Trading Cards Inc. of Edmonds, Wash., two days after the candy bars became available. “I had no idea the demand would be this phenomenal. We have more orders than we have bars being made.”MORE: 10 times Ken Griffey Jr. invaded pop culture in the ’90sThe 13-ounce candy bars resemble chocolate baseball cards, with wrappers showing the Seattle Mariners’ rookie center fielder at bat. The sale of the 95-cent bars began May 17, but some stores had been sold out before the candy even reached the shelves.“We had been taking phone orders for about two weeks before they actually were available,” one store manager said. “Out first shipments were sold out before they got here.”Cramer said his company was working two shifts and producing about 12,000 bars a day. He initially had planned to test market 2,500.“We weren’t ready for this,” he said. “I swear to God, we have to crank them out like Hershey bars.”
He said only local orders were being filled and he was not sure if the bars would be available nationally.“I have a large order from Cincinnati (Griffey’s father plays for the Reds), but I don’t know when, or if, I will get them out,” Cramer said. “At some point we may say, ‘We’re done’ and shut it down.“We’ll produce them until we get tired. I’d say we’ll do this another three or four weeks. But the time we’re done with this, we’ll have had our fill of chocolate. The crew is dragging and I am dragging right along with them.”

In First Hint of WSOP 2021 Revival, WSOP Launches “Ultimate Poker Champion” Sweepstakes Promo

วีไอพีจะไม่ดึงการพนันออกจากแหล่งเสื่อมโทรม
February 16, 2021 0 Comments

In what is thought to be the first sign that Caesars is planning for a live World Series of Poker festival in 2021, the operator has put on a new free-to-enter sweepstakes promotion, the Ultimate Poker Champion Experience.

Running from February 15 through April 30, 2021, the contest offers anyone in the United States a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be a part of the WSOP Main Event. One lucky person will not only get their entry into the Main Event paid in full, but they will also be treated to an elite experience during their stay. To enter, all you have to do is fill out the form.

With the coronavirus pandemic still causing mass disruption to live events and travel in the United States and around the world, the WSOP has yet to announce any schedule or plan for this year’s series. There is no information around the main event, for which the promotion is centered around.

The Normal Ramp Up to the WSOP

The WSOP is poker’s biggest event of the year. Tens of thousands of players descend on the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas for more than six weeks of poker. Action culminates in the $10,000 Main Event, the most prestigious tournament in the game. The winner is crowned the year’s champion, poker’s highest accolade.

However, last year, due to the coronavirus, the regular World Series of Poker 2020 was canceled for the first time in its 51-year history.

In its place was an online series held half in the United States—on the official WSOP Nevada and WSOP NJ online poker rooms—and half outside the US on global online poker room GGPoker.

In the winter, WSOP and GGPoker joined forces again for a hybrid online-live Main Event where players competed in tournaments online, then met for a live final table. The two winners of these met in a special heads-up match in Las Vegas.

Normally by now, organization and marketing are in full flow. Online satellites are underway on official WSOP sites as well as partners internationally. Schedules are revealed, packages are offered and promotions are spread.

However, nothing has yet been revealed for this year—understandable, given how no one knows how the next few months will unfold. That makes this promotion even more intriguing.

Sweepstakes Package Details

The winner of the sweepstakes promotion will win entry into the $10,000 buy-in 2021 WSOP Main Event.

As noted, normally this is a multi-day tournament held live in the Rio; last year, it was mostly online. What it will be this year is unknown. The implication, however, is that Caesars wants to run this live in Las Vegas, given the other parts of the prize package.

The winner and their guest will be flown to Las Vegas from anywhere in the continental United States. Once in the city, they will be treated to a dinner for two at a Celebrity Chef restaurant, a three night stay in a suite at Caesars Palace, a whisky and cigar night at the hotel’s Montecristo Cigar Bar, and $1,000 in spending money.

The total prize package, including all the extra goodies, is worth $14,000.

Hotel Stay at the Rio, a Hint of the WSOP Finally Moving?

Curiously, the stay is only for a three nights—which would normally not be long enough for a deep run of the WSOP Main Event. Last year, the tournament was spread over two weeks, with three Day 1s and two Day 2s then a Day 3, Day 4, and final table, with breaks gaps in-between.

Also of note, the hotel stay is in Caesars Palace, not the Rio. Whether this suggests an anticipated location move or not remains to be seen. The Rio was sold back in 2019 though Caesars agreed to manage the property for two years.

The 2020 event was scheduled to take place in the Rio, and the live Main event did go ahead in its convention center. However, no announcement has been made for the 2021 series—and with Caesars potentially coming to the end of its management contract, this could well be the first indication that WSOP plans to move it to another Caesars location in Las Vegas.

How to Enter the WSOP Ultimate Poker Champion Sweepstakes Promo

If you are a United States resident, just fill out this form. That’s it! You can read below for more details.

The contest is open to anyone over 21 years of age, with the exception of employees and family of Caesars Interactive Entertainment, Inc or Caesars Entertainment Services, LLC. The offer is only valid in the continental United States and void where prohibited.

Entries are open until midnight on April 30, 2021 and the winner will be randomly chosen on May 6, 2021 from all the entries received prior to the closing date.

In the event that the winner does not meet eligibility requirements, up to 5 alternate draws will be made to choose a winner. If no eligible winner is selected after the maximum 5 alternate draws, the prize will remain unawarded.

Prizes are non-transferable, and not subject to change except at the discretion of the contest Administrator. The Administrator reserves the right to substitute a prize of equal or greater value if the above prizes are not available for any reason, and winners are responsible for all taxes and fees which may be associated with receiving or using the prize. There is no cash equivalent for this prize.

The dates for the prize will be set once the Main Event is scheduled, but the trip must be taken before December 31, 2021. This gives the organizers a wide window to schedule the WSOP 2021 Main Event—whatever form it takes.

Hoosiers love their basketball. Ask anyone in Indiana and they’ll tell you that basketball isn’t just a sport; it’s a religion. The Indiana University Hoosiers’ basketball program has always been one of the best in the U.S. and the NCAA Hall of Champions is located in Indianapolis as a testament to the state’s attraction to basketball. On the NBA level, the Indiana Pacers have a massive following across the state, and all the attention given to hoops is paying off in a big way. Indiana continues to set new records with its sports gambling market, most of which is coming from basketball. In February of last year, the Indiana Gaming Commission (IGC) reported a handle of $187 million, a 10% increase from January. That wasn’t surprising, given the NFL Super Bowl action; however, assuming the money went to football would be wrong. The Big Game received $11.6 million in bets, while college and pro basketball accounted for over $90 million. Indiana continued to raise the bar on the sports gambling industry when the state’s sportsbooks recorded $251.4 million in November of last year, a $20-million increase over the prior month’s action. Much of that was destined for football as the NFL and college games were heating up, but, if there was any doubt of the importance of basketball in Indiana, the most recent numbers will push all of it aside. The IGC just released the latest figures on sports gambling and January was another record-setting month, the fifth consecutive month of breaking records. $348.2 million was wagered in the state last month, an increase of 11.2% over December and more than 100% over January 2020. Of that amount, $133.2 million went to hoops, making it the most money ever spent on one sport in the state. Football only got $77.6 million of the action. That’s not only good news for sportsbooks operating in the state, but it’s good news for the state’s budget, as well. With a tax of 9.5%, January gave Indiana’s government almost $2.8 million in tax revenue and, over the past 12 months, the state has received over $20 million. That’s not too bad for a local industry that has only been around since September 2019. Indiana can thank its neighbors for some of its additional wealth. Kentucky and Ohio don’t yet have sports gambling, although legislation is in the works, so gamblers in both of the states often hop over the border to place their bets. Illinois has a robust sports gambling market and is ranked fourth in terms of handle among legal states, but it doesn’t allow gambling on in-state college games. As a result, it loses some of the potential action it could be receiving and which might allow it to brag as being first or second in the sports gambling rankings.

California slaphouses continue to get slapped by the police

Bitcoin Casino: การพนันออนไลน์ด้วย Bitcoin
February 16, 2021 0 Comments

It’s not easy trying to be a provider of illegal gambling activity in California. The Golden State has a history of digging up underground gambling houses and isn’t slowing down. Last week, police in Anaheim descended on a business they suspected was operating as a slaphouse, an illegal gambling site, and weren’t wrong. By the time the raid was over, around 70 people had been arrested, even as many tried to scatter like rats from a sinking ship. What was reportedly a furniture store was actually an illegal gambling property. Police spent two months gathering evidence and securing their case before moving in last Wednesday, serving a warrant that morning and confirming their suspicions. Inside, there were gambling machines, money and guns, as well as a number of gamblers. Some of those busted out windows as they tried to make a run for it, only to be met outside by more police, including members of the local SWAT team. The slaphouse was reportedly able to function undetected 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Police had received numerous complaints about the operation before they launched their investigation, and are becoming more familiar with the seedy underground gambling scene that continues to emerge across California. Most of these, in addition to offering a form of entertainment California lawmakers don’t want to address, involve illegal weapons and, on occasion, illegal drugs, making them a public risk that has to be contained. 2019 saw a number of slaphouses busted, most around the Los Angeles area. Other cities have to deal with them, as well, with Long Beach often a favorite go-to spot for criminals. This is the second time in five months that Anaheim police have intervened in an illegal gambling house. Last October, 70 people were arrested when they moved in on a supposed slaphouse, uncovering video gaming machines, electronic gaming tables and more. That raid apparently didn’t provide the example that it should have, as the raid last week occurred right next door to that October bust.Slaphouses get their names, according to the way the tale is told, from the sound made when a gambler slaps his or her hand on the controls of the gaming machine. If California continues its crackdown on the illegal operations, a more fitting description would be that the name comes from the sound of having the cuffs slapped on you at an underground gambling house.

Casino Business Talking Points: Pent-Up Demand Will Fuel New ‘Roaring Twenties’

เคล็ดลับในการรับมือกับจังหวะที่ไม่ดี
February 16, 2021 0 Comments

Casino executives and gaming industry leaders continue to forecast a strong recovery, primarily due to pent-up demand.
D Casino owner Derek Stevens, seen here last fall inside his new property Circa, is bullish on the gaming industry’s post-coronavirus recovery. The downtown Las Vegas visionary expects pent-up demand to generate a new “roaring twenties.” (Image: Las Vegas Review-Journal)The frequent talking points from gaming industry brass recently target a new “Roaring Twenties.” Wynn Resorts CEO Matt Maddox was first to link the current decade to the 1920s when the US experienced economic prosperity and ushered in a new culture highlighted by modernity and the changing role of women.“I think it will be similar to the Roaring Twenties after the pandemic of 1918 and 1919,” Maddox said of the US gaming industry’s post-COVID-19 outlook.Downtown Las Vegas casino magnate Derek Stevens issued a similar sentiment last Friday.A lot of people have said it’s going to be like the Roaring Twenties,” the Circa owner told KTNV. “Well, it may be, because I think there is so much demand to be able to get back out of the house and have a little bit of fun.”The Roaring Twenties were unfortunately followed by the Wall Street Crash of 1929 and the Great Depression. But that isn’t stopping casino heads from believing that the gaming industry is poised to enter its own roaring period in the 2020s.Industry Bets on Roaring 2020sMaddox and Stevens aren’t alone in believing that travel and hospitality will flourish once Americans feel safe. The notion is backed outside of Las Vegas, too.In Atlantic City, Steve Callender, Caesars Entertainment’s top executive in town who chairs the Casino Association of New Jersey, said he’s “guardedly optimistic.”It’s going to take a couple months for the vaccine to be widely distributed. But there is incredible pent-up demand,” Callender told the AP. Bob McDevitt, Atlantic City’s top casino union rep, said the “pent-up demand is going to be explosive.”Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment, in a filing with the SEC, said its business “has been optimized to benefit from … significant pent-up demand for leisure consumption in the months and years ahead.”Bill Miller, president of the American Gaming Association, expressed his confidence in a 2021 recovery. There’s huge pent-up demand for gaming,” Miller said. “I’m upbeat about the second half of the year in particular. As vaccines roll out, people will be excited to travel, hungry for entertainment, and desperate to get out and have fun again.”Research suggests there’s pent-up demand not just for fun, but also for non-remote business. A recent study commissioned by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority found that 91 percent of former convention-goers miss in-person events.Casino Expansion ContinuesLast year was unlike any year prior for the US gaming industry. And casino companies are betting it will be unlike any in the near future, too.Despite the industry’s struggles over the past 12 months, casinos are continuing to invest in new markets. States that recently legalized commercial gambling include Illinois, Virginia, and Nebraska.New casinos also continue to come to Pennsylvania, which has surpassed New Jersey to become the second-richest gaming state in terms of revenue, behind only Nevada. Live! Philadelphia, a $700 million integrated casino resort, opened this month.
